As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
