Seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
