In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
