Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
