Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
