The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
